German Lesson in Stalinabad [Dushanbe, Tajikistan], November 27-December 25, 1932

Jacobi visited a variety of schools in her travels through the Soviet Union. In this school in the Tajikistan capital of Stalinabad (now Dushanbe), Jacobi photographed men and women in a German language class. There are several adult women in the class made up mostly of men, one of whom is practicing writing in German on the chalkboard while her fellow classmates observe. Foreign language classes were one of the ways the Soviet Union education reforms modernized the Soviet Union and encouraged a broader world-view for its people.
