Two Women, Stalinabad [Dushanbe, Tajikistan], October 27-November 25, 1932

Although many women unveiled during the hujum, many chose not to. Coupled with the extreme violence that unveiled women faced, other reasons such as modesty and remaining true to traditions and religion encouraged women to keep their veils. While the women photographed here are not wearing the traditional full covering of the paranji, they continue to wear head scarves, as many women chose to do years after the hujum.
